Barrow, Susan A., and Gloria M. Soto Rodriguez. No date. Closer to Home: Interim housing for long-term shelter residents. A study of the Kelly Hotel. (On-line: cited 28 August 2003). This is a matched study of residents living at a transitional housing program for the mentally ill in 1988. The authors compared a group of twenty four residents to a similar group of shelter residents. There was a follow-up study done after ten months. The report was based on interviews with tenants and staff and program and demographic data.

Burt, Martha R. 2001. What will it take to end homelessness? (On-line: cited 11 September 2001). A short survey of existing research on the homeless and the author’s argument that efforts to prevent homelessness are crucial.

Burt, Martha R., Dave Pollack, Abby Sosland, Kelly S. Mikelson, Elizabeth Drapa, Kristy Greenwalt, and Patrick Sharkey. 2002. Evaluation of continuums of care for homeless people: Final report. (On-line: cited 28 August 2003). A study of twenty five successful programs that provide comprehensive services for the homeless and prevention efforts in 2000. Based on interviews and site visits, the study describes the leadership needed to provide services for different populations in great detail.

Corporation for Supportive Housing. 2002. Connecticut Supportive Housing Demonstration Program Evaluation Report Highlights. (On-line: cited 28 August 2003). (Complete report by chapter.) A demonstration project of supportive housing for clients with AIDS, mental illness, and/or drug abuse. Client surveys and data were evaluated upon entrance, periodically, and upon exit. The clients used fewer costlier inpatient services as they utilized more housing-provided services.

Culhane, Dennis P., Stephen Metraux, and Trevor Hadley. 2002. Public service reductions associated with placement of homeless persons with mental illness in supportive housing. (On-line: cited 28 August 2003). A matching study comparing New York City mentally disabled persons in supportive housing to those in shelters between 1989 and 1997. The tenants in supportive housing had fewer hospital visits, shorter hospital stays, and spent less time in jail.

Granruth, Laura Brierton, and Carla Hett Smith. 2001. Low income and housing services program: Towards a new perspective. (On-line: cited 28 August 2003). An historical overview of services provided to the homeless, and a description of the federal programs designed to promote coordinated services for homeless assistance programs.

Greiff, Debbie, Tony Proscio, and Carol Wilkins. 2003. Laying a new foundation: Changing the systems that create and sustain supportive housing. (On-line: cited 28 August 2003). A general guidebook for providing supportive housing. Based on case studies of best practices.

Long, David A. 1999. The next step: Jobs Initiative cost-effectiveness analysis, final report. (On-line: cited 28 August 2003). This is a matched study of participants in a program to provide employment assistance for formerly homeless residents from 1995 through 1998. Participants were compared to a group similar in gender, race, age, living situation, employment history, and disabilities. The participant group had earnings forty two percent higher than the comparison group, and received less public assistance.

National Alliance to End Homelessness. 2000. A plan not a dream: How to end homelessness in ten years. (On-line: cited 28 August 2003). An argument that the best way to address homelessness is to emphasize prevention and quick placement in permanent housing for the homeless.

Singleton, Theresa, Christopher Holden, Amy Rose, and Mary Stover. 2002. Continua of care best practices: Comprehensive homeless planning in rural America. (On-line: cited 28 August 2003). A study of best practices in rural programs funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2000. The study is based on data sources and interviews with staff members.
